We are a group of friends based in the UK who happened to visit St Joseph’s School for the Hearing Impaired in November 2009 while we were holidaying in Makeni Sierra Leone.
The school and its Director, Sister Mary, impressed us enormously but we were alarmed to hear that the school had financial difficulties because its main donor had recently announced that funding would cease.
We returned to the UK determined to take some action.
We established Friends of St Joseph’s School as a registered charity in June 2011 and now fund raise for the school. To date we have raised over £100,000 and have begun to make a considerable impact on the school and its development.
We are committed to making the school self-sustaining so it never again faces the possibility of closure if funding disappears.
