School Farm News June 2013

The rains have arrived which is good news for the farm but less good for the electricity supply. Groundnuts are being planted, there is a bumper harvest of pineapples and corn is being planted around the pineapples to provide chicken feed. Pupils have begun to cultivate the land in the front of the school preparing the soil for planting of their own individual crops.

The chickens are laying well and the eggs are being sold at the local supermarket. With the arrival of an incubator the school can soon start rearing their own chicks. A cockerel has been acquired who struts his stuff in his own pen!

Tracking the eggs

The school farm is successfully caring for the 1000 chickens purchased last year and now eggs are being laid at  a good rate. The local supermarket has agreed to buy all the stock and will take more.

More chicks are to be bought soon and an incubator for 1000 eggs is on its way to Makeni so the school can hatch its own chicks. The building to house the incubator has been built and is ready.
